About MBSP
Madison Ballet Special Projects is an initiative devoted to enriching the artistic, intellectual, and civic life of ballet in Madison, Wisconsin.
Closely partnered with Madison Ballet and the School of Madison Ballet, MBSP functions as both think tank and public square for ballet, supporting the creation, understanding, and sustainability of the art form in the 21st century.
Core Pillars
1. Artistic and Community Support
We offer multidimensional support to Madison Ballet and the wider dance ecosystem. Through salons, open houses, artist talks, and workshops, we build bridges between the studio and the public - making the work of dancers more visible, more discussable, and more beloved. Our goal is to cultivate curiosity for ballet as a living art and civic pride in the dancers and creatives in our community.
2. Dramaturgy and Creative Development
MBSP equips choreographers and artistic leadership with deep resources: literary and musical research, dramaturgical insight, and structured creative development. We help shape ballets not just as movement, but as meaning—bringing intellectual rigor and cultural imagination to the studio.
3. Interdisciplinary Engagement
We aim to connect ballet with the broader artistic world. From academic partnerships to print, digital and multidisciplinary objects - vinyl albums, chapbooks, visual art - we engage artists, writers, musicians, and thinkers in dialogue with dance. Our mission is not just to interpret ballet, but to activate it: as shared inquiry, aesthetic pleasure, and public good.
